The beautiful brown red color of this common garden-plant is composed on one side of yellow elements, on the other of red units. Of the yellow there are two, one staining the whole corolla with a light hue, as is to be seen in the pure yellow variety called luteum. This form has been produced by the loss of the whole group of the red constituents.

It seems as if, once successful impregnation has been achieved, the feminine organism adrenalizes itself, makes itself more masculine and less feminine, inhibiting the posterior pituitary and the adrenal medulla, as well as the ovaries. Besides, the corpus luteum stimulates the thyroid to prepare for the heavy demands to be made upon it during pregnancy.

Tragopogon luteum, yellow Goatsbeard, at 3 5 and at 9 10. Lapsana, nipplewort, at 5 6 and at 10 1. Nymphæa alba, white water lily, at 7 and 5. Papaver nudicaule, naked poppy, at 5 and at 7. Hemerecallis fulva, tawny Day-lily, at 5 and at 7 8. Convolvulus, at 5 6. Malva, Mallow, at 9 10, and at 1. Arenarea purpurea, purple Sandwort, at 9 10, and at 2 3. Anagallis, pimpernel, at 7 8.

The same substances diffusing from the ovum during its development in the uterus would continue to stimulate the follicle cells, and thus explain not merely their persistence, but their secretory activity. The ovum being no longer present in the ovary, the secretions would remain in the follicular cells, and the corpus luteum would be explained.

In the corpus luteum the lutein is contained in the cells, not in a blood-clot. Chemical investigation shows that the lutein of the corpus luteum is almost if not quite identical with the colouring matter of the yolk in birds and reptiles. Physiol. The difference, if it exists, is very slight, and it is evident that one compound could easily be converted into the other.

I have already mentioned that this process does not occur in Teleosteans whose ovaries were studied by me. These were species of Teleosteans in which fertilisation is external. Lin. Marshall himself examined sections of the corpus luteum of Ornithorhynchus and saw much hypertrophied and apparently fully developed luteal cells, but no trace of any ingrowth from the wall of the follicle.

Gustav Born suggested, and Fraenkel tested the suggestion experimentally, that the corpus luteum of pregnancy is a gland of internal secretion whose function is to cause the attachment of the ovum in the uterus and the normal development of uterus and placenta.

Numbers of ova die without reaching maturity, the follicular cells degenerate, and the follicle becomes filled with the cells of the theca interna, which have a resemblance to those of the true corpus luteum. These degenerate follicles have been termed spurious corpora lutea, or atretic vesicles. The interstitial cells are the remains of these atretic vesicles.

In women, the adrenal medulla naturally tends to overtop the cortex, because the latter makes for masculinity. Besides, the recurring cycle in the ovary, making the corpus luteum, evolves an additional stimulant to the medulla, through its irritating influence upon the thyroid. Then the influence of the post-pituitary is anti-adrenal cortex.

The variety of snapdragon chosen was of medium height and with the yellow ground-color, and is known by horticulturists as A. majus luteum rubro-striatum. As the yellow tinge showed itself to be invariable; I may limit my description to the red stripes. Some flowers of this race are striped, others are not.
