Meanwhile Daniel was standing on the deck of the Lucy Ann, drinking in the fresh salt breeze and eagerly watching the shores as the boat passed between Charlestown and Boston and dropped anchor in the harbor to set the Captain's lobster-pots.

This at the end of about twenty feet opened out into quite a large rough place, which contained some old nets and tins, along with about a dozen half rotten lobster-pots, but nothing more. "There must be another place somewhere," cried the lieutenant after convincing himself that there was no inner chamber. "Lead on, coxswain, with the light."

Bloodcurdling tales of lobster-pots carried to sea filled the air; but the air was as blandly unconscious of ever having been a fury as a lady who has found her lost temper. Swift alternations of weather are so characteristic of our colonial climate that the other afternoon I went out with my umbrella against the raw, cold rain of the morning, and had to raise it against the broiling sun.

They also use large cylindrical baskets, with reversed cones in the mouth like those of lobster-pots, but of much greater size. Fish are also caught by means of weirs. These are well built, supported by strong posts. They are formed when the water is low.

"It is old Billy Mollet after his lobster-pots," and he stood up and coo-eed to the new-comer, and waved his arms till Billy saw them and stared hard and then turned leisurely their way. "Guyablle!" said the old man, as he drew in. "What you doin' there now?" "Got carried out of Grande Grève by a current, Mr. Mollet. Will you take us back in your boat?"

Here there was much small traffic in dingies and dories and lobster-pots; the slower tides rocked the little craft at the moorings, and sent bright swinging light against the weather-worn planks under the pier.

Day after day he continued much in the same state, though he endeavoured to encourage them with the hopes that he should get well at last. The weather continued so bad all this time that Michael could not get out in the boat to fish with lines or lay down his lobster-pots. He and Nelly might have lost spirit had not their granny kept up hers and cheered them.

He had just arranged a masterpiece, half-a-dozen of the prettiest children, sitting beneath a broken boat, on spars, sails, blocks, lobster-pots, and what not, arranged in picturesque confusion; while the black-bearded sea-kings round were promising them rock and bulls-eyes, if they would only sit still like "gude maids."

However, the place contrives to look as unknown as ever, as if only some lazy gulls and a few fishermen mending lobster-pots had ever heard a hint of it.

Further down are queer, quiet towns, hundreds of years old, squeezed into the mouths of deep valleys valleys full of delicate ferns and small wild roses and the white heath, a flower peculiar to the locality. And still lower on the very shingle are the amphibious-looking cottages of the fishermen. They are surrounded by nets and boats and lobster-pots.
