It is probable that these small embedded fragments were not separately ejected, but were entangled in a fluid volcanic rock, allied to obsidian; and we shall presently see that several varieties of this latter series of rock assume a laminated structure. Those occupy the more elevated and central, and likewise the south-eastern, parts of the island.
In the stone was visible a thin vein, bluish white in color. He managed to break off a fair-sized lump containing a well-defined specimen of the foreign metal. They hurried into the open air and examined the fragment with curious eyes. The sailor picked it with his knife, and the substance in the vein came off in laminated layers, small, brittle scales. "Is it silver?" Iris was almost excited.
The lowest bed of a calcarous sericitic schist is four feet thick and underlies a bed of schistose lime stone six feet in thickness, which is in turn covered by a finely laminated phyllite, ten feet thick. The whole is capped by thirty feet of quartzite, which forms the top of a long ridge.
The magnets were made compound, laminated; a large number of thin horseshoe magnets were laid together, with opposite poles touching. These were all comparatively small machines what we now, with some reason, regard as having been toys whose present results were rather long in coming. Then came Siemens, of Berlin, in 1857.
On her triumphal robe, seamed with pearls, flowered with silver and laminated with gold, the breastplate of jewels, each link of which is a precious stone, flashes serpents of fire against the pallid flesh, delicate as a tea-rose: its jewels like splendid insects with dazzling elytra, veined with carmine, dotted with yellow gold, diapered with blue steel, speckled with peacock green.
The climate was severe in winter, the mercury often dropping to 30 deg. below, though we then had no thermometer to measure it, and the summers, at an altitude of two thousand feet, cool and salubrious. The soil was fairly good, though encumbered with the laminated rock and stones of the Catskill formation, which the old ice sheet had broken and shouldered and transported about.
E.A. Stevens of Hoboken, with thick plates, confirm this conclusion. The value of hard surfaces on inclined armor will be alluded to. Solid and Laminated Armor compared. Backing.
If it were examined microscopically, it would show itself to be a more or less distinctly laminated mineral substance, and nothing more. But the slice of chalk presents a totally different appearance when placed under the microscope.
This receipt has been commonly sold for $5. Take 100 grams of laminated gold, mixed with 20 grams of hydrochloric acid; 10 grams of nitric acid; the liquid thus composed is placed over a moderate fire, and stirred constantly until the gold passes into the state of chlorine; it is then allowed to cool.
The dunes near the mouth of the Nile, the lower sands of which have been cemented together by the infiltration of Nile water, would probably show a similar stratification in the sandstone which now forms their base. Dana describes a laminated rook often formed by the infiltration of water into the sand dunes on the Hawaian islands.
