In those days the atmosphere of Boston was charged with enthusiasm for education and the humanities. Among young Sumner's friends were Prescott, who was writing the history of Spain and Mexico; Bancroft, who was outlining his history of the United States; Story, the jurist; Horace Mann, the educator; Dr.

And besides, Madison prided herself then as now on being a college that taught the humanities in all soberness, according to ideals brought out of New England by its founders. The proposed change caused an historic clash between town and gown in which the gown triumphed. University forsooth!

"The fires that arch this dusky dot Yon myriad-worlded way The vast sun-clusters' gather'd blaze, World-isles in lonely skies, Whole heavens within themselves, amaze Our brief humanities." As our American poet never elaborates in the Tennysonian fashion, he does not use science as material, but as inspiration.

Most of his learning developed in the Humanities; and a cultured visitor from Maryland who once stopped at his father's house declared that this boy of fourteen was better posted in history than anyone he had ever seen. It was about this time that Robert Toombs was fitted out for Franklin College now the State University located in Athens, Ga., forty miles from Washington.

But I should hasten to add that I have also seen what we call the humanities so taught that the pupil has emerged from them with a supreme contempt for the life of labor and a feeling of disgust at the petty and trivial problems of human life which every one must face.

It does not, however, follow therefore that the humanities of the race at large, in spite of superstition and bad government, were vitiated. I am of course speaking of the Renaissance as distinguished from that new phase of Italian history which followed the Council of Trent and the Spanish despotism. We have positive proofs to the contrary in the art of the Italians.

Mr. Judge's Bryan Kinnavan stories indicate that it was a grand stronghold of the former. The Nemedians were akin to the Partholanians: the Second Race to the First, both mindless: they came after their predecessors had all died out; and in their turn died or departed to the last man. So we find in The Secret Doctrine that the first two humanities passed utterly and left no trace.

Whether from my taste for the "humanities" or not, I am unable to say, but certainly in my then humour, I should not have exchanged my position for one of much greater pretensions to elegance and ton. There was first a general onslaught upon the viands, crashing of plates, jingling of knives, mingling with requests for "more beef," "the hard side of the salmon," or "another slice of ham."

It is the cardinal doctrine of what John Quincy Adams has very properly styled the Satanic school of philosophy, the ethics of an old Norse sea robber or an Arab plunderer of caravans. It is as widely removed from the sweet humanities and unselfish benevolence of Christianity as the faith and practice of the East India Thug or the New Zealand cannibal.

By rare and happy fortune they were inspired at once by the rich and varied presences of mythology, 'the fair humanities of old religion, and also by the highest aspirations of an age of moral and intellectual advance.
