Charles Miller, who, on the 19th of September 1770, proceeded from Fort Marlborough to Bentiring on the Bencoolen river, thence to Pagar-raddin, Kadras, Gunong Raja, Gunong Ayu, Kalindang, and Jambu, where he ascended the hills forming the boundary of the Company's district, which he found covered with lofty trees.
The little pleasant-faced Malay captain of his Highness's three-hundred ton yacht Pante called softly, close to my ear, "Tuan Tuan Consul, Gunong Ladang!" I sprang to my feet, rubbed my eyes, and gazed in the direction indicated by the brown hand.
It is singular if the same country produces likewise the diminutive breed that goes by the name of bantam. A species of partridge is called ayam gunong, or mountain hen. The selaya, or punei andu, another variety, has the body and wings of deep crimson, with the head, and extremity of its long indented tail, white; the legs red.
The pass of Bukit Berapit, seen in solitude on a glorious morning, is almost worth a journey round the world. Another wonder of the route is Gunong Pondok, a huge butte or isolated mass of red and white limestone, much weather-stained and ore-stained with very brilliant colors, full of caverns, many of which are quite inaccessible, their entrances fringed with immense stalactites.
Above and overshadowing all both in beauty and historical interest was the famous old mountain where King Solomon sent his diminutive ships for "gold, silver, peacocks, and apes." By the time the ladies were astir, the mists had vanished and Gunong Ladang, or as it is styled in Holy Writ Mount Ophir, presented to our admiring gaze its massive outlines, set in a frame of green and blue.
Datus, strictly, native chiefs, heads of tribes. Dusun, agricultural villagers on the northern extremity of Borneo. Dyaks; or Dyak, aborigines of Borneo, and generally pronounced Dyah. Dyak Darrat, Land Dyaks. Dyak Laut, Sea Dyaks. Gantong, a Malay measure for rice. Gunong, a mountain. Hadji, a Mahomedan who has made a pilgrimage to Mecca. Haraforas, or Arafuras, natives of Papua.
Water indeed is not so abundant as to the southward, which may be attributed to the comparatively level surface, the chain of high mountains which extends northwards from the straits of Sunda through the interior of the island, in a great measure terminating with gunong Passummah or Mount Ophir. About the bay of Tappanuli however the land is high and wooded near the coast.
