In 1445 an expedition was fitted out by Prince Henry himself, and the command given to Gonsalvo de Cintra, who was unsuccessful in an attack on the natives near Cape Blanco. He and some other of the principal men of the expedition lost their lives. These were the first Portuguese who died in battle on that coast. In the same year the Prince sent out three other vessels.
I make him talk for the purpose of getting at his secret; but he is of a truly Castilian taciturnity, proud as though he were Gonsalvo di Cordova, and nevertheless angelic in his patience and gentleness.
It seems that Gonsalvo was one of the greatest humorists, as well as captains of his age, and the king may very well have liked his fun no better than his fame. Now that he has been dead nearly four hundred years, Ferdinand would, if he were living, no doubt join Cordova in honoring Gonzalo Hernandez de Aguila y de Cordova.
"The Great Captain," Gonsalvo de Cordoba, was warring against Doria's kinsman, Juan Roverejo; this commander had rendered a great service to the Dorias by rescuing David Doria from imprisonment at Ancona, and Andrea decided to throw in his lot with him. He accordingly armed twenty-five cavaliers at his own expense, and joined Roverejo, who put him in charge of the fortress of Rocca Guillelma.

Children are hardly out of the cradle before they are arrested for butting into the speed limit with a smoke wagon. Even when they go courting they have to play to the gallery. Nowadays Gonsalvo H. Puffenlotz walks into the parlor to see Miss Imogene Cordelia Hoffbrew. "Wie geht's, Imogene!" says Gonsalvo.
He was capable of that executive furor, that intense passion of exertion, which the man of Latin race can exhibit when he has once fairly set himself to an enterprise. He was of the breed which in nobler days had produced Gonsalvo, Cortes, Pizarro, and Darien. These riders had set out at ten o'clock in the morning; at five in the afternoon they drew bridle in sight of the Apache encampment.
He is making the bluff of his life you see, and he has to do even that on tick. Besides, this furnishes the local color. Then Gonsalvo bursts forth again, "Imogene! Oh! Imogene! Will you be mine and I will be thine without money and without the price." Gonsalvo pauses to let this idea get noised about a little. Then he goes on, "Be mine, Imogene!
Charles VIII. of France invades Italy. Expedition of Vasco di Gama to the East Indies round the Cape of Good Hope. Naples conquered from the French by the great Spanish general, Gonsalvo of Cordova. League of Cambray, by the Pope, the Emperor, and the King of France, against Venice. Albuquerque establishes the empire of the Portuguese in the East Indies.
He said, "That certainly that Pereyra, whom the viceroy had empowered by his letters, was some lord of the court of Portugal, and not James Pereyra, who had been domestic servant to Don Gonsalvo de Cotigno," But that which most disturbed him, was, that, besides the honour of such an embassy, the merchant should make so vast a profit of his wares, which he would sell off at an excessive rate in China.
