He was accompanied by two French soldiers Des Marais and La Routte and by a few Montagnais Indians from Tadoussac. Lawrence valley and the shores of Lakes Ontario and Huron to rob and massacre. The Huron group included the Waiandots, the Eries or Erigas, the Arendáronons, and the Atiwándoronk or "neutral" nation.

The region which has been described was not, however, the original seat of those nations. They belonged to that linguistic family which is known to ethnologists as the Huron-Iroquois stock. This stock comprised the Hurons or Wyandots, the Attiwandaronks or Neutral Nation, the Iroquois, the Eries, the Andastes or Conestogas, the Tuscaroras, and some smaller bands.

For behind the Eries, moving slowly, came a slender shape, shrouded in white. Her head was bent in the shadow of her cowl; her white wool vestments trailed behind her. Both hands were clasped together under her loose robe. On her cowl was a wreath of nightshade, with its dull purple fruit and blossoms clustering around her shadowed brow.

"If the Eries learned that from the Nez Perces, why might not the Wyandottes also learn it?" "He wears the Hawk." "Yes, I know it." "He saw the moccasin tracks in the sand at the other ford, Loskiel, and remained silent." "I know it." "And I believe, also, that he saw the canoe." "Then," said I, "you mean that this Wyandotte is a traitor." "If he be a Wyandotte at all." "What?"

The works of Cuyahoga County and other sections of northern Ohio bordering the lake, and consisting chiefly of inclosures and defensive walls, are of the same type as those of New York, and may be attributed to people of the Iroquoian stock. Possibly they may be the works of the Eries who, we are informed, built inclosures.

The number of them caused me to gasp for breath. "Monsieur," I whispered timidly, "you can never attack; there are too many." "They appear more numerous than they are," he answered confidently, "but it will be a stiff fight. Not all Tuscaroras either; there are Eries yonder to the right, and a few renegade Mohawks with them.

The Iroquois most vigorously waged war during his time upon every other tribe of Indians. They altogether exterminated the Eries, and in their very wickedness, did good in rendering their country more susceptible to colonization by Europeans. D'Avaugour was recalled.

Now, the same reason which has created New York gave to the position of the Five Nations its great importance in Canadian history. But in reality the racial stock of the Iroquois extended much farther than this, both west and south. It took in the well-known tribe of the Eries, and also the Indians of Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac.

Radisson was constrained to witness many acts against the Eries, which must have one of two effects on white blood, either turn the white man into a complete savage, or disgust him utterly with savage life.

The Eries perished in a war provoked, as the French missionaries in their always trustworthy accounts inform us, by a perverse freak of cruelty on their own part. Yet, in all these destructive wars, the Iroquois never for a moment forgot the principles which lay at the foundation of their League, and which taught them to "strengthen their house" by converting enemies into friends.
