Hence it is the fashion amongst its opponents to write of it as "mystical" or, as Loeb does, as "supernatural," probably the most illogical term that could possibly be used. What is Vitalism? It is the theory that there is some other element call it entelechy with Driesch, or call it what you like in living things than those elements known to chemistry and physics.

Mental activity has a character altogether alien to association: it is spiritual, not mechanical; an entelechy, not a genesis. For these and other reasons association has fallen into some disrepute; but it is not easy to say what, in absolute psychology, has come to take its place.

Intellect transcends the given and means the absent because life, of which intellect is the fulfilment or entelechy, is itself absorbed from without and radiated outward.

A squinsy gripe the cod's-headed changelings at the swallow and eke at the cover-weasel; we shall make 'em But the deuce take 'em! Aristotle, that first of men and peerless pattern of all philosophy, was our sovereign lady's godfather, and wisely and properly gave her the name of Entelechy.

One sporadic growth of human nature may be substituted for its whole luxuriant vegetation; one negative or formal element of happiness may be preferred to the full entelechy of life.

This ideal of perfection varies, indeed, but only with the variations of our nature of which it is the counterpart and entelechy. There is perhaps no more frivolous notion than that to which Schopenhauer has given a new currency, that a good, once attained, loses all its value.

In other words: if it is the dominant factor, as the writer would lead us to suppose; if there is "direction," then the action of energy must be directive; and, if it is directive, in what possible way does it differ, save in name, from the old entelechy or vital principle, or whatever else one may choose to call it?

This is really Aristotle's idea, only Plato expresses it rather under a psychological, Aristotle under a vital, formula. God, Aristotle says, is eternally and necessarily Entelechy, absolute realisation. What is first in essence or absolutely, is the universal, that is, the form or idea, the datum of reason.

'There is an X', he wanted to say, 'which scholasticism has defined as substantial form, but I am going to give a new definition of it. Entelechy was a useful name for X, the more so as it had the authority of Aristotle, the master of scholasticism. Under the name of entelechy Leibniz was upholding the soul of scholastic doctrine, while retrenching the limbs and outward flourishes.

Her true name then is Entelechy, and may he be in tail beshit, and entail a shit-a-bed faculty and nothing else on his family, who dares call her by any other name; for whoever he is, he does her wrong, and is a very impudent person. You are heartily welcome, gentlemen. With this they colled and clipped us about the neck, which was no small comfort to us, I'll assure you.
