Then, to add still further to the difficulties of Spain, and to bring the tension between her and the United States to practically breaking-point, came the "Dupuy de Lome" and the "Lee" incidents. The first of these arose out of a letter written by Senor Dupuy de Lome, the Spanish Minister at Washington, to his friend Senor Canalejas, who was then in Cuba on a visit.
This report alone would justify his claim to be considered the leading naval architect of that time; it did not bear fruit fully for some years, but its recommendations were ultimately realized. M. Dupuy did not stand alone in the feeling that radical changes in the construction and propulsion of ships were imminent.
The cars furnished with propellers attached in 1852 to the aerostats of the elongated form introduced by Henry Giffard, the machines of Dupuy de Lome in 1872, of the Tissandier brothers in 1883, and of Captain Krebs and Renard in 1884, yielded many important results.

In the northern masters there is no appearance of what M.
