The new year was now come, and the Southern Army, as yet too weak to cope with the enemy, was cut into two wings of observation; one under General Greene himself at Cheraw Hill, the other and lesser in the knoll forests of the Broad with Daniel Morgan for its chief; both watching hawk-like the down-sitting of my Lord Cornwallis, who seemed to have taken root at Winnsborough.

And yet, it is a truth of revelation that God searches the heart of man; that He knows his down-sitting and uprising, and understands his thought afar off; that He compasses his path and his lying-down, and is acquainted with all his ways.

Lady Mary and her sister as children, their plain faces emerging timidly from their white, high-waisted frocks; Lady 'Mary's mother, an old lady in a white coif and kerchief, wearing a look austerely kind; on the other side a clergyman, perhaps the brother of the old lady, with a similar type of face, though gentler a face nourished on the Christian Year; and above and below them two or three card-board texts, carefully illuminated by Lady Mary Leicester herself: "Thou, Lord, knowest my down-sitting and my uprising."

We live every moment in the darkest midnight as well as at the brightest noon in the full blaze of Omniscience. "O Lord, thou hast searched me and known me: thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising; thou understandest my thoughts afar off." Incapable of enduring this exposure, the criminal now rushes from her concealment, and boldly calls out, "I laughed not."

Every day a table of thirty covers was laid for those whom he chose to invite; he dined in public a fanfaronade of trumpets proclaiming his down-sitting and his up-rising and the people thronged the banqueting-hall in such numbers that barriers had to be erected in the middle of it to keep the obtrusive multitude at a respectful distance.

"Of old," he exclaims, "hast Thou laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the work of Thy hands. I know not what theologians may think of this passage, but from a scientific point of view it is unassailable. So again, "O Lord," he exclaims, "Thou hast searched me out, and known me: Thou knowest my down-sitting and mine up-rising; Thou understandest my thoughts long before.

You remember his hard, weather-beaten countenance, where every line seemed drawn with "a pen of iron and the point of a diamond;" his considerate gray eyes, that moved over objects as if it were not best to be in a hurry about seeing; the circumspect opening and shutting of the mouth; his down-sitting and up-rising, all performed with conviction aforethought in short, the whole ordering of his life and conversation, which was, according to the tenor of the military order, "to the right about face forward, march!"

I have known your down-sitting, and your up-rising; and have understood your thoughts afar off. You gave way to the suggestions of fallen angels, and so your foolish hearts were darkened and alienated, and estranged from God. Touching the book of my remembrance, who can contradict it? Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.

The great God our Judge, then, surely knows the mass of men, in their down-sitting and uprising, with a knowledge that is equal to their own. And thus do we establish our first position, that God knows all that the man knows; God's knowledge is equal to the very best part of man's knowledge. In concluding this part of the discussion, we turn to consider some practical lessons suggested by it.

Flee then to CHRIST, and so be prepared to know God and your own heart, even as you are known. PSALM cxxxix. "O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my down-sitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with, all my ways.
