Ideally, every word in a poem should be charged with feeling; but actually this is not the case, for many words, taken by themselves, are too abstract or commonplace to possess any. Words all too familiar, or connectives, like "and" and "but" and "or," are examples of this; the former may be avoided by the poet, but the latter are indispensable.
Pronouns are the most effective connectives that we have; therefore recast your sentences so that there will be as little change of subject as possible. These connectives will vary with the nature of the assertion to be refuted; the important thing is to state the assertion so clearly that your critic can judge the relevancy and force of your refutation. A brief in all its parts should be phrased in complete sentences; mere topics are of no value.
The connectives to be used are: as, because, for, and since. XI. Make no unsupported statements unless they are generally admitted to be true. XII. After all evidence state in parentheses the source from which it came. XIII. Phrase refutation so that the argument to be answered is clearly stated. XIV. Put into the conclusion a summary of the essential points established in the discussion.
From the form of simple child-speech, made up often of monosyllables or of a few brief and easy sentences, the child must now evolve a more complicated form of thought-expression, with the use of connectives, descriptions and a finer gradation of color than heretofore.
