We unite ourselves in a league, not as atheists, but as misotheists, against all that is called God; not in unbelief, but in revolt and utter defiance." Such is the substance of the programme, announced on the pages of the "Anarchist," published in New York, of the new Misotheistic Association.
And therefore these prophets are as much atheists as myself, or as any of my freethinking brethren whom I lately named to you. I will give you some instances of his freethinking.
'What we are now to deliver, my brethren, hem hem, I mean, my good friends, was not done in a corner, and may serve as an answer to witch-advocates, atheists, and misbelievers of all kinds.
"Not in your sense, I am afraid," said Herrick. "I never argue with young atheists or habitual drunkards," said Attwater flippantly. "Let us go across the island to the outer beach." It was but a little way, the greatest width of that island scarce exceeding a furlong, and they walked gently. Herrick was like one in a dream.
Did Atheists thus act, did they perpetrate, connive at, or tolerate such atrocities as were brought to light during the Andover inquiry, such cold blooded heartlessness would at once be laid to the account of their principles. Oh yes, Christians are forward to judge of trees by their fruit, except the tree called Christianity.
The church came from the catacombs to establish the inquisition. In our own lives we may be Christs today and atheists tomorrow. Power and authority destroy more Christs than the dungeon and the stake.
Still more, as we have already observed, those persons have frequently been accused of atheism, who have taken the greatest pains to establish the existence of the gods, but who have not produced satisfactory proofs: when their enemies wished to take advantage of them, it was easy to make them pass for atheists, who had wickedly betrayed their cause, by defending it too feebly.
There are men who will walk all day through a June wood and come out atheists at the end of it, finding no signature thereupon; and there are others who, sailing over the sea, come back home after seeing so many things still puzzled as to their authorship. That is one parable. Then there is this: the corrective of ambition.
And it was against the same Epicurean Atheism that Cudworth contended in his "Intellectual System of the Universe," when he grappled with the objections which had been urged against the doctrine of Providence and the practice of prayer. It is not wonderful that either Atheists or Pantheists should discard the doctrine of Providence, or deny the efficacy of Prayer.
I confess that the way is open for improvement among Protestants in this respect, but is it not just as open for a similar improvement among unbelievers in the scientific field of thought? There we find Atheists, Pantheists, Deists, Polytheists and Theists. In their history will be found an immense mass of contradictory opinions. Man is imperfect in many of his attainments.
