"Still, whatever his points of interest, he was but a stray catch. Chance had brought him as it might bring others of the same kind in the course of years. But this would not answer my purpose. Numbers were what I wanted and what I had arranged for; and it was with deep disappointment that I recognized that my plan had failed. The supply of anthropological material had come to an end.

C.G. Seligmann, in Reports of the Cambridge Expedition to Torres Straits, v. L. Crauford, in Journal of the Anthropological Institute, xxiv. p. 181. Dr. C.G. Seligmann, op. cit. v. 206. Walter E. Roth, op. cit. p. 25. Dr. C.G. Seligmann, in Reports of the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to Torres Straits, v. From notes kindly sent me by Dr. C.G. Seligmann.

Let us therefore study it attentively not merely as a narrative which, in the dramatic force of its gruesome simplicity, is not surpassed, if it is equalled, by the witch scenes in Macbeth but as a piece of evidence bearing on an important anthropological problem. He therefore "inquired of Jahveh," but "Jahveh answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets."

Since his day, to be sure, the Peruvian Government had actually finished a road which led past Machu Picchu. On the other hand, a Harvard Anthropological Expedition, under the leadership of Dr. William C. Farrabee, had recently been over this road without reporting any ruins of importance. They were looking for savages and not ruins.

This is the anthropological factor, which may assume a pathological form, in which case articles 46 and 47 of the penal code remember that there is such a thing as the personality of the criminal.

So it is in the religious Mysteries of the African Yao; a selfish man, we shall see, is spoken of as 'uninitiated. So it is with the Australian Kurnai, whose mysteries and ethical teaching are under the sanction of their Supreme Being. So much for the anthropological dogma that early theology has no ethics.
