CLETHRA ACUMINATA. Pointed-leaved Pepper Tree. Carolina, 1806. This is not so hardy as C. alnifolia, hailing from the Southern States of North America, but with a little protection is able to do battle with our average English winter. It resembles C. alnifolia, except in the leaves, which are sharp pointed, and like that species delights to grow in damp positions.

Even within the limits of the same genus, we meet with this same difference; for instance, the many species of Nicotiana have been more largely crossed than the species of almost any other genus; but Gärtner found that N. acuminata, which is not a particularly distinct species, obstinately failed to fertilise, or to be fertilised by, no less than eight other species of Nicotiana.

I suspect that the Zelkova crenata var. repens of M. Lavallee's "Aboretum Segrezianum" and the Planera repens of foreign catalogues generally are identical with the variety now mentioned under the name it bears in the establishment of Messrs. Lee & Son. Z. acuminata is one of the most useful and valuable of Japanese timber trees. It was found near Yeddo by the late Mr.

In 1854 the remains of another mammifer, small in size, but larger than any of those previously known, was brought to light. Portion of a fossil fruit of Podocarya Bucklandi, Ung., magnified. Cone of fossil Araucaria sphaerocarpa, Carruthers. Inferior Oolite. Bruton, Somersetshire. One-third diameter of original. Ostrea acuminata.

Even within the limits of the same genus, we meet with this same difference; for instance, the many species of Nicotiana have been more largely crossed than the species of almost any other genus; but Gartner found that N. acuminata, which is not a particularly distinct species, obstinately failed to fertilise, or to be fertilised, by no less than eight other species of Nicotiana.

It is hardy, and grows freely in rather sandy or gravelly soil. MAGNOLIA ACUMINATA. Cucumber Tree. North America, 1736. This is a large and handsome species, of often as much as 50 feet in height, and with a head that is bushy in proportion. The leaves are 6 inches long, ovate and pointed, and of a refreshing shade of green.

This work contains transverse and longitudinal sections of one hundred Japanese woods, and numbers 45 and 46 represent Z. acuminata. It would be worth the while of those who are interested in the introduction and cultivation of timber trees in temperate climates to procure Kinch's handbook. IDENTIFICATION. Zelkova acuminata, D.C. Prodr., xvii., 166; Z. Keaki, Maxim. Mel. biol. vol. ix, p. 21.

Z. crenata, from the Caucasus, and Z. acuminata, from Japan, are quick growing, handsome trees, with smooth bark not unlike that of beech or hornbeam; it is only when the trees are old that the bark is cast off in rather large sized plates, as is the case with the planes.

Ghour, ‮قور‬, Sterculia acuminata, Pal. de Beauv. He did not know there was a new world before I told him. In their "Declaration of Independence," the Anglo-Americans say "All men are created equal," and "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights;" and "amongst these, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Celebration of Marriage. Native Feast of the Slaves.

Schizodus Schlotheimi, Geinitz. The hinge of Schizodus truncatus, King. Mytilus septifer, King. Syn. Modiola acuminata, Sowerby. This formation is seen upon the coast of Durham and Yorkshire, between the Wear and the Tees. These shells occur at Hartlepool and Sunderland, where the rock assumes an oolitic and botryoidal character. Some of the beds in this division are ripple-marked.
