Its home is not on the frontier nor in the populous city, not among the trees of the wild forest nor the cultured groves of Academe. Its dwelling is in the heart. It speaks a score of dialects but one language, follows a hundred paths to the same goal, performs a thousand kinds of service in loyalty to the same ideal which is its life.

It is that revival of the old learning, arrested, daguerreotyped at the moment in which the new begins to stir in it, in minds which are going to be the master-minds of ages. 'Common sense' is the word here already. 'Common sense' is the word that this new Academe is convulsed with when the curtain rises.

Since that day over one hundred thousand visitors to the building have sat in admiration before it. The Grove of Academe was to become a Dream Garden, but it was only after six years of incessant effort, with obstacles and interventions almost insurmountable, that the dream became true. XXIII. Theodore Roosevelt's Influence

The progress of thought from the philosopher of the Academe to the Arcadian historian may be best illustrated by a comparison of the method by which each of the three writers, whom I have selected as the highest expression of the rationalism of his respective age, attained to his ideal state: for the latter conception may be in a measure regarded as representing the most spiritual principle which they could discern in history.

That is the key to the books of this Academe, who carry always on their armour, visible to those who have learned their secret, but hid under the symbol of their double worship, the device of the Hunters, the symbol of the twin-gods, the silver bow, or the bow that finds all. 'Seeing that she beareth two persons ... I do also otherwise shadow her.

The consequences may be easily imagined. The newly enfranchised blacks showed no inclination for the groves of Academe, and not a single representative of the race applied for matriculation. The outraged white population turned its back upon this new type of coeducation; in the autumn of 1872 not a solitary white boy made his appearance.

The dramatic representation here is meagre; but we shall find upon inquiry it is already the Globe Theatre, with all its new solidarities, new in philosophy, new in poetry, that the leaves of this park hide this park that the doors and windows of the New Academe open into these new grounds that it lets out its students to play and study in, and collect their specimens from 'still and contemplative in living art. It was all the world that was going through that park that day haply, we shall find.

He reassured me in the laconic and sarcastic manner of his kind, and we really reached Cambridge by the route he had taken. The beautiful elms that shaded great part of the way massed themselves in the "groves of academe" at the Square, and showed pleasant glimpses of "Old Harvard's scholar factories red," then far fewer than now.

There was in him a union of the manly grace and sublime simplicity, of chivalry with the intellectual splendour of the Attic Academe.
