He afterwards established himself under royal patronage in Denmark where he died in 1570. Corneille Ingelrams, a painter in distemper, was born in 1527. On the evening of March the 3rd, 1580, the Count entertained a large number of the most distinguished families of the place at a ball and banquet. She also appealed to his family pride, which should keep him, she said, from the contamination of companionship with "base-born weavers and furriers."

It appears by a document laid before the states-general in the winter of 1580- 1581, that the Count had himself advanced to Orange 570,000 florins in the cause. The total of money spent by the Prince himself for the sake of Netherland liberty was 2,200,000. These vast sums had been raised in various ways and from various personages.

It is now recognized that nine years is the utmost that can be assigned, letters being extant which fix the genesis of the play in 1581, or at the earliest in 1580 a year or so previous to Guarini's departure from Ferrara . Again, it has been usual to assume that the play was performed as early as 1585, whereas there is in truth no evidence of any representation previous to the appearance of the first edition dated 1590 . The early fortunes of the play are indeed typical of the ill-success that dogged the author throughout life.
