These proposals and a few others of similar nature they put forward not because they expected to carry any of them into effect, for they, if anybody, understood the purposes of the Romans, but in order that failing to obtain their requests they might secure an excuse for complaints, on the ground that wrong had been done them. The first personage in this family who occupies an important place in the history of the famous Tuscan republic is Silvestro de' Medici, gonfaloniero in 1378. This Silvestro had two sons, Cosmo and Lorenzo de' Medici.

The influence of Alice Perrers over the King was resented by his courtiers, who procured her banishment when he died in 1378. After her marriage, however, King Richard II. granted the manor to her husband. There is a gap in the records of the manor subsequently until John Payne died, leaving it to his son William in 1572.

The first choice, Urban VI., remained at Rome; the second, Clement VII., betook himself to Avignon. They duly excommunicated each other, and the Latin Church was rent in twain.
"Gregory occupied the papal chair from 1370 to 1378 and, like his immediate predecessors, resided at Avignon until 1376, when he terminated the Babylonian captivity by returning to Rome.
