Of this Pitti Palace, which is the most beautiful in Europe, mention will be made in another place with a more suitable occasion.
The very knick- knacks scattered carelessly about the room might have been admired in the cabinets of the Palazzo Pitti. Beyond this room lay the salle de danse, its ceiling painted by , supported by white marble columns, the glazed balcony and the angles of the room filled with tiers of exotics.
The Duchess also made much use of Baccio in the Pitti garden, where she had caused to be constructed a grotto full of tufa and sponge-stone formed by the action of water, and containing a fountain; and for this Baccio had caused his pupil, Giovanni Fancelli, to execute in marble a large basin and some goats of the size of life, which spout forth water, and likewise, for a fish-pond, after a model made by himself, a countryman who is emptying a barrel full of water.
All this is proper enough, of course, but it serves to render the Pitti a difficult gallery rightly to study pictures in. In the first chapter on the Uffizi I have said how simple it is, in the Pitti, to name the best picture of all, and how difficult in most galleries.
