For hours their way had been through a trackless plain of uncropped salt grass, or grama, on the rising slopes: now they were in a country of worn and freshly traveled trails: wise Midnight knew there would be water and nooning soon. Already they had seen little bands of horses peering down at them from the high knolls on their right. Midnight wondered if they were to find sweet water or alkali.
GENERAL APPEARANCE A lady's little dog intelligent, sprightly, robust, of compact appearance reminding one of a cob, and captivating the attention by a quasi-human expression. HEAD Rounded, furnished with somewhat hard, irregular hairs, longer round the eyes, on the nose and cheeks. EARS Erect when cropped as in Belgium, semi-erect when uncropped.
"Would you like to have me tote it to you, or do you reckon you could toddle this far with yore little old iron?" But if the calf gave much trouble, then all work ceased while the unfortunate puncher wrestled it down. Toward noon the work slacked. Unbranded calves were scarce. His dark ears were uncropped at a period when cropping was general; his weight approximated to our modern average. He was an all coloured red, and his legs were of a length that would not now be seriously objected to. But in his day he was not accepted as typical, and he was not particularly successful in the show ring.
But if his face was pale, his hair made a brave attempt to atone for this lack of colour, for it was the richest, most uncompromising red; and as though he delighted in its warm tints, Mr. Snelling allowed it to grow in uncropped abundance, and his favourite gesture was to thrust his fingers through its tangled mass.
His dark, straight hair was long and unkempt; the finer lines of his cheeks and chin were blurred with the uncropped growth of a week-old beard; his eyes were bright and quick; his glance restless and comprehensive.
There were violets on the hillside, and I fell amongst them and lay there. I kissed them, and they awakened. 'Ah, is it you, little moonbeam? they said, and they nestled in the grass which the lambs had left uncropped.
The pressure of a dutiful kiss touched my forehead, and I minded the passion kisses of a dead mother. Those errant curls blew out in the wind. "Ramsay Stanhope," begins my uncle sourly, "what do you with uncropped hair and the foolish trappings of vanity?" As I live, those were the first words he uttered to me.
