There are thousands of millions of suns in our galaxy, and not less than one in three has planets, and among these myriads of unknown worlds there will be thousands with seas and land and clouds and continents, fit for men to enter upon, there to rear their cities. There will be starships roaming distant sun-clusters, and landing on planets in the Milky Way.

As velocity approaches that of light, time approaches zero. That was the key to the universe. Time approaches zero. The crew of a spaceship travelling from Earth to Alpha Centauri at a speed close to that of light would hardly notice the passage of time on the journey. It was, of course, impossible ever actually to reach the speed of light. But the great starships could come close.

Smooth, streamlined, it was a lovely sight as it stood at the spacefield in the shadow of the great starships. Alan looked at it with pride a slender dark-green needle yearning to pierce the void. He wandered around the spaceport and heard the fuelers and oilers discussing it in reverent tones. "That's a mighty fine piece of ship, that green one out there. Some lucky fellow's got it."

But starships are more important than a fool's hankering to be famous! He'd never try it! He'd be afraid it wouldn't work! I don't play!" Holden said stridently: "I don't give a damn about any deal you made with Dabney! But if you can get us to the stars all us humans who need it you've got to!" Jones said, again calmly: "I'm willing.

But if he can't understand it himself, even to lecture about it ... Do you think I'm going to throw in some extra stuff I noticed, that I can fit into that theory but nobody else can Do you think I'm going to give him starships as a bonus?" Holden said, nodding, with his lips twisted: "I should have figured that! He bought his great discovery from you, eh?

Vaillant turned on him and said fiercely, "If that's what you think " Then he controlled himself and said tightly, "Quarrelling's no good. We're in a box but we can maybe still put it over if we get this man to Sako. Webber, you and Paula take him in the flitter." Kieran rose to his feet. "Fine," he said gaily. "Let us go in the flitter, whatever that is. I am already bored with starships."

His eyes were blue and intense, and they gave Kieran the feeling that this man was a wound-up spring. He looked down and said, "How do you feel, Kieran?" Kieran looked up at him. He asked, "Am I in a starship?" "Yes." "But there aren't any starships." "There are. You're in one." The sandy-haired man added, "My name is Vaillant." It's true, what he says, murmured the something in Kieran's mind.
