It has been noticed of sea-kale, that, on eating it, it does not impart to the urine that strong and unpleasant scent which asparagus and other vegetables do. SKIRRETS. Sium Sisarum. The roots of this plant are very similar to parsneps, both in flavour and quality; they are rather sweeter, and not quite so agreeable to some palates. It is a biennial sown in March, and used all the winter.

SKIRRETS. Hamburgh parsley, scorzonera, and skirrets, are much esteemed for their roots, the only part which is eaten. They should be boiled like young carrots, and they will eat very well with meat, or alone, or in soups. The shoots of salsify in the spring, from the roots of a year old, gathered green and tender, will eat very nice, if boiled in the same manner as asparagus.

"The man is either mad, or making verses." A smart description of a miser ridiculously acting the extravagant. In the first place, there was a Lucanian boar, taken when the gentle south wind blew, as the father of the entertainment affirmed; around it sharp rapes, lettuces, radishes; such things as provoke a languid appetite; skirrets, anchovies, dregs of Coan wine.

It must stand as long as a venison-pasty, and it will be good. To make a Skirret Pye: Boil your biggest skirrets, and blanch them, and season them with cinamon, nutmeg, and a very little ginger and sugar. Your pye being ready, lay in your skirrets; season also the marrow of three or four bones with cinamon, sugar, a little salt and grated bread.

In the winter season, some men working in a garden threw up some roots which were supposed to be Skirrets, and those were cooked for dinner.

In justice, however, to the public, I must mention that I can vouch for the fact, and trust it may not pass without notice, so far as to let the berries be supposed anything but wholesome. Plantae affines. The idea of Skirrets being confounded with this plant, is, I think, erroneous, if it has leaves on, as they are not pinnated, and very different from it.

NOVEMBER. Meat. Beef, mutton, veal, pork, house lamb, doe venison, poultry and game. Fish as the last month. Vegetables. Carrots, turnips, parsnips, potatoes, skirrets, onions, leeks, shalots, cabbage, savoys, colewort, spinach, cardoons, cresses, endive, celery, lettuces, salad, herbs. Fruit. Pears, apples, nuts, walnuts, bullace, chesnuts, medlars, grapes. DECEMBER. Meat.

Why, poor Miss Faith Mary Knuckledown's idol, because of her kindness and sad disappointment had asked a little while ago for a bit of salsify, not for herself she never thought of herself but for a guest who was fond of it; also the Admiral himself had called out for a good dish of skirrets. But no; Mr. Swipes said the weather and the black blight had destroyed them.
