The rider was indulging in much injudicious vituperation of all the animal kingdom, including his own well-blown Cayuse, whose trembling flanks vouched for the energy with which he had tried to overhaul the galloping Bull. A'tim circled wide, and, when he considered it safe, fell into Shag's trail and followed on. Soon he overtook his comrade.
"We are at least forty miles from the railroad," he smiled back at her, "and the road is rough, over a mountain by the nearest way. Your horse must have been determined indeed to take you so far in one day. He is evidently a new purchase of Shag's and bent on returning to his native heath. Horses do that sometimes. It is their instinct. I'll tell you what I'll do.
"But I thought, Colonel, sah, dat de mo' of a puzzle it were, de bettah yo' laiked it!" ventured Shag. Colonel Ashley tried to repress a smile. "Get to bed, you black rascal!" he said with an affectionate pat on Shag's back. "Get to bed! What are you staying up so late for, anyhow?" "To gib yo' a message, Colonel, sah," answered Shag.
About half a mile on the other side of Shag's Hill there is a hotel, off from the road, looking like an overgrown Swiss châlet. Not a country-tavern by any means.
"Boys, boys!" he cried aloud, "Hal's going down! Something is wrong; he's sinking!" The words reached Shag's ears and he seemed to leap ahead like a giant fish. "Heaven help them!" moaned poor Cop. "Oh, what an idiot I was never to practise more!" "It's awful!" began Shorty. "Don't you open your head!" shouted Cop; "if I could swim like you nothing would keep me ashore."
I er I done brung in you ain't no 'jections to lookin' at papers now, has you?" he asked hesitatingly. For when he went fishing the mere sight of a newspaper sometimes set Shag's master wild. "No," was the answer. "In fact I was going to send you out for the latest editions, Shag."
Will you tell me dat fiss 'tory?" "Yes, Gerry, I'll tell you that if you'll be quiet now." And Shag's snores mingled with the gentle whisper of the water and the sighing of the wind in the willows.
