King William, Rapin says, wrote twice to him, "pressing him to put somewhat to the venture." But his army was wasted by disease, and had he volunteered an encounter and been defeated, his whole army, and consequently all Ireland, would have been lost, for he could not have made a regular retreat.
He was learned in two forms; he Hippocratized and he Pindarized. He could have vied in bombast with Rapin and Vida.
