More air was demanded and given; less was asked and the pumpers wrought gently. Molly gave one pull at the life-line, "All right?" Rooney replied, "All right." This was repeated several times. Then came four sharp pulls at the line.

One could see many mud-turtles floating lazily, feet outstretched in poise; and bullfrogs and little frogs; and, in the clear places, trim and self-sufficient mud hens. From the reeds at the edges flapped small green herons and thunder pumpers. And at last "Oh, look, papa!" cried Bobby excited and awed. "There's a snap'n' turtle!"

Almost before the coupling had been made at the engine the men and boys at the long pumping-bars were working them gently; within the minute a shout from the cart announced that the hose was being broken, the pumpers threw themselves into the work with zest, and the next moment from the distant nozzle shot a sputtering stream.

In order to test his assistants better, he then went out on the verandah of the pagoda, where the pumpers could not see him nor he them. He was, of course, fully dressed, only the bull's-eye was not fixed. "Now, Molly, dear," said he, "go to work just as if I was goin' under water." Molly dimpled her cheeks with a smile as she held up the glass, and said, "Are ye ready?"

Three or four would-be pumpers, among them Doggie, went to her aid. "All right, mother, we'll see to it," said one of them. So they pumped and filled the crocks, and one man got hold of one and Doggie got hold of another, and they carried them to the kitchen steps. "Merci, monsieur," said Toinette to the first; and he went away with a friendly nod. But to Doggie she said, "Entrez, monsieur."

But, Brent," her voice grew wondrously sincere, "there was something more to it: the simplicity with which that farmer, whose boots have been in the soil for six days, could merge so actually into those things which make for ideality! How few of us who cannot play an organ would deign to offer ourselves as pumpers for its prosy bellows!
