Men and women there are who search minutely for unknown powers in plant-life, and by infinite pains in the use of that power, when found, evolve newer, higher, and better types of fruit and flower. And this is a good work.
This is the one uniform law that governs everywhere, and the only one that accounts for all the diversified manifestations of plant-life, now, as heretofore, taking place upon our globe. And the same is measurably true of animal life.
Babs arrived in the almost-dark room only minutes after Cochrane. He was moving restlessly from one port to another, staring out. "I thought I'd tell you," Babs volunteered, "that Doctor Holden put some algae from the air-purifier tanks in the airlock, and then opened the outer door." "Why?" asked Cochrane. "Algae's Earth plant-life," explained Babs.
Let your thought sink to the depths of the ocean, and realize your kinship with the Life back of the forms dwelling there. Look at the plant-life, and the animal life, and seek to see behind the veil of form into the real Life behind and underneath the form. Learn to feel your Life throbbing and thrilling with the Life Principle in these other forms, and in the forms of those of your own race.
This is only one of a large number of cases more than we have room to specify in this connection showing that wherever man, artificially or otherwise, produces the necessary conditions of plant-life, nature responds to the germinal law precisely as she did millions of years ago when the first salt-marsh favored the appearance of these saline plants such as grow under no other conditions or circumstances.
Meanwhile the young man's ears became attuned to the jungle noises, his eyes observant of the many kinds of life about him. The wood was crowded with plant-life utterly strange to him. On the hill above towered a giant ceiba-tree, its trunk as smooth as if polished by hand and bare of branches except at the very top, where, instead of tapering, it ended abruptly in a tuft of foliage.
"I liked to see the short-lived plant-life in the gutters poor weeds that a storm soon washed away. I studied the mosses, with their colors revived by showers, or transformed by the sun into a brown velvet that fitfully caught the light.
From that original plant-germ have sprung all the ferns and grasses, the shrubs and trees and flowers, of the present day. So in that plant-germ must have resided the plant-spirit with an ideal of all this variety of plant-life actuating it unconsciously, of course, but most effectively for all that.
The problem of the place of the origin of maize is probably insoluble, but speculations are legitimate and such are all I have to offer. The fecundity of plant-life in the Rocky Mountains is remarkable, particularly on the southern slopes, where they subside into the mesa, or table-land formation, north of the San Juan River. The continental divide is in the eastern margin of the region.
In particular, I would recommend a visit to the museum of antiquities at Batavia as an introduction to the study not only of the Hindu remains, but also of the native industries and manner of life. The subjects of special interest in Java may be grouped under five heads the Hindu antiquities, the native towns, the plantations, tropical plant-life, and sport.
