The army remained at Matamoras until sufficiently reinforced to warrant a movement into the interior. One column, under General Zachary Taylor, penetrated northern Mexico and fought the battles of Matamoras, Palo Alto, and Resaca de la Palma, in May, 1846, with a force of 2,200 men; forced the evacuation of Monterey in September, his army swelled to 5,000; and defeated Santa Anna at Buena Vista in February, 1847.

The line of the Rio Grande was all that was necessary to hold, unless it was intended to invade Mexico from the North.
