Many primitive peoples are endowed with memories that are double photographs. The world faiths, based upon centuries of these appearances, are none the less to be revered because machine-ridden men have temporarily lost the power of seeing their thoughts as pictures in the air, and for the time abandoned the task of adding to tradition.

It takes some of the cold iron out of the mechanistic theory of life if we divest it of all our associations with the machine-mad and machine-ridden world in which we live and out of which our material civilization came. The mechanical, the automatic, is the antithesis of the spontaneous and the poetic, and it repels us on that account.
The mechanical conception of life repels us because of its association in our minds with the fabrications of our own hands the dead metal and wood and the noise and dust of our machine-ridden and machine-produced civilization. But Nature makes no machines like our own.
And the animals ! Extinct, almost, in modern machine-ridden cities, here they visibly and audibly prevailed. For Asia lives intimately if not always mercifully with her animals; and Roy's catholic affection embraced them all. Horses first a long way first. But bullocks had their charm: the graceful trotting zebus, horns painted red and green.
At the worst, it is only an unhappy misunderstanding of orders. And if the end should happen to justify the means " Hildreth shook his head gravely. "You don't understand, David. If you could be sure of a fair-minded judge and an unbiased jury you and those who are implicated with you: but you'll get neither in this machine-ridden State."
