The odour of some kinds is extremely fetid and disagreeable. Notwithstanding this, they are eaten by many tribes of Indians, and even the French Creoles of Guiana have their "bat-soup," which they relish highly. The proverb "De gustibus non disputandum est" seems to be true for all time.
Racketty-Packetty House was carried to a splendid Nursery in a Palace, and Meg and Peg and Kilmanskeg and Ridiklis and Gustibus and Peter Piper were made so gorgeous that if they had nest been so nice they would have grown proud. But they didn't.
Who can define "the decencies of controversy?" Everyone has his own criterion in such matters, which is usually unconscious and fluctuating. What shocks one man pleases another. Does not the proverb say that one man's meat is another man's poison? Lord Coleridge reduces Blasphemy to a matter of taste, and de gustibus non est disputandum.
Choice in selection is always, of course, an affair de gustibus, and especially when, like the present, there is considerable embarrassment of riches, coupled with the purpose of compressing our results in one handy volume.
Then they ran and peeped out of the windows and then they ran back and laughed again. "Well," said Peter Piper, "we have been called Meg and Peg and Kilmanskeg and Gustibus and Peter Piper instead of our grand names, and now we live in a place called Racketty-Packetty House. Who cares! Let's join hands and have a dance."
"See, LeMaury, this is young Master Everett, whom you have bewitched with your paint-pots. He would fain be an artist de gustibus ! Perhaps you have in him an apprentice for your return to France." The artist looked sharply at Nathaniel. "Eh, so? Can young master draw? Doth he know aught of chiaroscuro?" Nathaniel blushed at his ignorance and looked timidly at his protector.
"Oh! do take me," said Lady Patsy. So he helped her down the ladder and took her under the armchair and into Racketty-Packetty House and Meg and Peg and Kilmanskeg and Ridiklis and Gustibus all crowded round her and gave little screams of joy at the sight of her. They were afraid to kiss her at first, even though she was engaged to Peter Piper.
Do you think they will?" And actually tears began to run down their cheeks. Peter Piper sat down on the floor all at once with his hands stuffed in his pockets. "I don't care how shabby it is," he said. "It's a jolly nice old place and it's the only house we've ever had." "I never want to have any other," said Meg. Gustibus leaned against the wall with his hands stuffed in his pockets.
And during that dull, rainy day of waiting for trains at Montauban, it made me live over again another day of rainy travel, but with the "Zauberflöte" at the end of it, about which I will also tell you, since I am permitted to know my own mind and to speak it. But I find I have incidentally raised the question de gustibus, or, as our language puts it, the accounting for tastes.
De gustibus non est disputantibus, as our colonel used to say. Disgust, is the result of a special treaty of amity and reciprocity between the stomach and the imagination, differing according to difference in the contracting parties.
