In Bursley market-place the week's labour was being translated into food and drink and clothing by experts who could distinguish infallibly between elevenpence-halfpenny and a shilling. Rachel was such an expert. She forced her thoughts down to the familiar, sane, safe subject of shopping, though to-night her errands were of the simplest description, requiring no brains.
The first to arrive on the scene had been Tinkler Tam, who put down elevenpence-halfpenny in copper money upon the counter with a crash, and informed the Bailie's senior assistant that to save time he would just take the whisky while they were making up the tea, and was promptly ordered out of the shop for an impudent, drunken blackguard.
And the enraged Bailie lost all self-control as he read the legend on the board. "A low, mean, dirty trick, a deliberately planned fraud. It's perfectly iniquitous, in fact, juist juist damnable! Bankrupt who is bankrupt? Is't me?" And the veins on the Bailie's neck swelled visibly. "Tea at elevenpence-halfpenny! I never had such trash in my shop.
Gibson was occasionally inclined to complain of the frequency of Helen Kirkpatrick's letters; for before the penny post came in, the recipient had to pay the postage of letters; and elevenpence-halfpenny three times a week came, according to Mrs Gibson's mode of reckoning when annoyed, to a sum 'between three and four shillings. But these complaints were only for the family; they saw the wrong side of the tapestry.
I could not help asking, for I had been diverted by the number of calculations in his narrative. "One hundred and twenty-eight pounds nineteen shillings and elevenpence-halfpenny," he replied with composure; "that's leaving out what little he won at Van John. It's something for a Kanaka, you know."
I know they are some ordinary price elevenpence-halfpenny, or three-and-six, or seven-and-six, or something one of those prices that everything is sold at but further I don't go. Perhaps I say elevenpence-halfpenny at a venture. His face lights up with quiet malice. "Don't keep them, sir," he says. I can tell by his expression that I am ridiculously low, and so being snubbed.
