One would assume that with all these duikers there would hardly be room left in Africa for any other animals. But there is. For instance, there's the oribi and the dik-dik, to say nothing of the steinbuck and the klipspringer. The last named is a rock-jumping antelope, the others little grass antelopes, and all of them are as pretty and cute as animals can be.

For upward of a mile the hunters encountered nothing but a few dik-dik and steinbuck tiny grass antelope, too small for the purpose. Then a shift of wind brought to them a medley of sound a great persistent barking of zebras supplying the main volume. At the same time they saw, over a distant slight rise, a cloud of dust. Simba's eyes were gleaming. "Game! Much game there, bwana!" he cried.

The water-buck came here in herds from the elephant country away south, beyond the hour-glass-like constriction which divided the great forest, and the tiny dik-dik, smallest of all antelopes, came also to take its sip. But all that is past.

The papyrus should make a good lurking place for almost anything; but the few points of access to the water failed to show many interesting tracks. Nevertheless we decided to explore a short distance. For an hour we walked among high thornbushes, over baking hot earth. We saw two or three dik-dik and one of the giraffes.

He is a cheerful, gallant, quaint little person, with the air of being quite satisfied with his own solution of this complicated world. Among the low brush at the edge of the river jungle dwelt also the dik-dik, the tiniest miniature of a deer you could possibly imagine.

They are all small, the dik-dik being scarcely larger than a rabbit, and they are divided into as many subspecies as the duiker. A list of the different kinds of oribi would take up several lines of valuable space without conveying any illuminating intelligence to the lay mind. We found thousands of oribi on the Guas Ngishu Plateau.
