Harz would not stay to lunch, but asked if he might begin work that afternoon; he left a little suffocated by the sandalwood and sympathy of this sphinx-like woman. Walking home along the river wall, with the singing of the larks and thrushes, the rush of waters, the humming of the chafers in his ears, he felt that he would make something fine of this subject.

The song of birds, the hum of chafers and bees, the whisper of leaves, and all the rush and rustle of the forest were its mother-tongue. Yet, not so!

The fern-owl, or goatsucker, is one of the most harmless of birds a sort of evening swallow living on moths, chafers, and similar night-flying insects. Continuing my walk, still under the oaks and green acorns, I wondered why I did not meet any one.

"Tree of apples like a hostel vast, ... The music of the bright red-breasted men, ... Swarms of bees and chafers, the little musicians of the world, A gentle chorus." It may not be amiss, in concluding this note, to add a word about the author other than as he appears in this book. These stories exhibit only one aspect of his gifts. They happen to be one of the things he wrote down.

Those far, continual sounds, not stilled in the country till long after the sun dies, had but just ceased from haunting the air, where the late May-scent clung as close as fragrance clings to a woman's robe. There was just the barking of a dog, the boom of migrating chafers, the song of the stream, and of the owls, to proclaim the beating in the heart of this sweet Night.

The eternal summer the same in his day as in ours he speaks of as "a coloured mantle," and he mentions "the fragrance of the woods." And seeing the crisp leaves for the summer was waning I repeated his phrase, "the summer's coloured mantle," and remembered: "Swarms of bees and chafers, the little musicians of the world A gentle chorus."

Here and there he noticed a bird sitting on a branch, with head erect and swelling throat, but his ear caught nothing. The dogs opened their mouths as if to bark, the toiling oxen seemed about to bellow, but neither bark nor bellow reached the prince. The water flowed noiselessly over the pebbles, the wind bowed the tops of the trees, flies and chafers darted about, without breaking the silence.
