And so from the mouth of this not very devout king the prophet was reminded of his own ancient experiences, and invited to feel that, unseen or seen, the solemn forms stood 'bright-harnessed, and strong, 'in order serviceable, ranged about him for his defence and blessing. And are they not round about us?
Who can count the glancing wings of the white-winged flock of sea-birds as they sail and turn in the sunshine? Who can count the numbers of these 'bright-harnessed angels, sometimes more, sometimes less, flickering and fluttering into and out of sight, which shone upon the vision of the weeping onlookers?
His road leads him close by the country of Esau. Jacob was no soldier, and he is naturally terrified to meet his justly incensed brother. And so, as he plods along with his defenceless company trailing behind him, as you may see the Arab caravans streaming over the same uplands to-day, all at once, in the middle of his march, a bright-harnessed army of angels meets him.
God's angels ever draw near to hearts opened by desire to receive them. Not in visible form, but in reality, 'bright-harnessed angels stand' all around the chamber where prayer is made. Our hours of supplication are God's hours of communication. The vision to Cornelius is not to be whittled down to a mental impression.
It is generally supposed that the 'Angel of the Lord' here is to be taken collectively, and that the meaning is the 'bright-harnessed' hosts of these divine messengers are as an army of protectors round them who fear God. But I see no reason for departing from the simpler and certainly grander meaning which results from taking the word in its proper force of a singular.
Would he not recall the old story, and bethink himself of how round that other frightened man 'Bright-harnessed angels stood in order serviceable' and would he not, as he looked on his little band of friends, faithful among the faithless, have his eyesight cleared to behold the other camp?
