Academica, an exposition of the New Academic Philosophy, advocating probability rather than certainty as the foundation of philosophy; De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a work criticising the most prominent views entertained concerning Ethics; Disputationes Tusculanae, treating of certain conditions essential to morality and happiness;
All those treatises, beginning with the Academica written when he was sixty-two, two years only before his death, and carried on during twelve months with indomitable energy the De Finibus, the Tusculan Disputations, the De Natura Deorum, the De Divinatione, and the De Fato were composed during the time named.
No incident will be introduced for which there is not authority, in Wood, or in Mr. Anstey's invaluable documents, the Munimenta Academica, published in the collection of the Master of the Rolls. Some latitude as to dates must be allowed, it is true, and we are not of course to suppose that any one day of life was ever so gloriously crowded as that of our undergraduate.
It is lost with the exception of a few fragments. The same fate has befallen the Hortensius, which would have been an extremely interesting treatise. The Academica is divided into two editions; the first, called Lucullus, is still extant; the second, dedicated to Varro, exists in a considerable portion.
In describing the Academica, the first of these works in point of time, it is necessary to explain that by reason of an alteration in his plan of publishing, made by Cicero after he had sent the first copy to Atticus, and by the accident that the second part has been preserved of the former copy and the first part of the second, a confusion has arisen.
I need hardly say that we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves: the impressions of that good old time were deep and durable. The Praca Academica had been rigged out to serve as a tilting-yard, with a central alley of palisading and two 'stands, grand and little.
Lucullus probably did not survive beyond the year B.C. 56. He was older than Cn. Pompeius Magnus, who was born B.C. 106. The character of Lucullus may be collected from Plutarch. He was a man of talent and of taste, a brave soldier, a skilful general and a man of letters. Cicero in the first chapter of the second book of the Academica Priora has passed a high eulogium on him.
