A general poll tax, which was to be paid by every one above sixteen years of age, was established in 1379 and another one in the following year to meet the expenses of the hopeless French war which was now being conducted by incapable and highly unpopular ministers. In 1381 rioting began among the peasants in Kent and Essex, and several bodies of the insurgents determined to march upon London.

Of the mediæval peal, which consisted of six bells, the largest, known as the Klank Knoll, was made in 1379 at York, and perhaps hung in the north tower; while some of the others seem to have been made in Ripon in 1391. They were all recast in 1761 by Lester & Pack of London, after which there were eight. The ninth bell is rung every evening at nine for the curfew.
In the year 1379, on the 5th day of May, in the Gulf of the Venetians near Pola, there was a battle of 22 Genoese galleys with 22 galleys of the Venetians, in which were 4075 men-at-arms and many other men from Pola; of which galleys 16 were taken with all that was in them by the noble Lord Luciano Doria, Captain General of the Commune of Genoa, who in the said battle while fighting valiantly met his death.
The Exchange is a most curious building of great antiquity, and the hall is certainly the most curious and grotesque room in the world. The ancient coat of the bend lozenge, was now changed for the partie per pale, indented, or, and gules.
