I take them to be, in the true sense of the term, a Messianic prophecy; and I take it that, just because Zerubbabel, a member of that royal house from which the Messiah was to come, was the builder of the Temple, he was a prophetic person.
Zerubbabel finished his task, but its end was but a new beginning of an order of things of which he did not see the end. There are no beginnings or endings, properly speaking, in human affairs, but all is one unbroken flow. One man only has made a real new beginning, and that is Jesus Christ; and He only will really carry His work to its very last issues.

Before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain. Great mountains only become plains before men of strong wills and fixed faith. There is something very pathetic in the picture of the assembled people groping amid the ruins on the Temple hill, to find 'the bases, the half-obliterated outlines, of the foundations of the old altar of burnt offerings.
