Uncle Dick Wooton told how once, when he, Old Bill Williams, and many other trappers, were lying around the camp-fire one night, the strange fellow, in a preaching style of delivery, related to them all how he was to be changed into a buck elk and intended to make his pasture in the very region where they then were.

Only a short time before their departure from the fort, an Indian of that tribe had been murdered by a Ute, and one day this Shawnee who was with Wooton spied a Ute, when revenge inspired him, and he forthwith killed his enemy.

Mr. is making extensive alterations in the house, or has recently done so, and this is perhaps one reason of its ungenial meagreness and lack of finish. Before our departure from Wooton, Tupper had asked me to leave my card for Mr. ; but I had no mind to overstep any limit of formal courtesy in dealing with an Englishman, and therefore declined.

'Too late! he said, in a matter of fact kind of way, glancing up from a somewhat obstinate tent-peg with which he was struggling. 'Too late, my friend, too late! The young fellow was startled. 'Oh, don't say that, Mr. Wooton! he pleaded, a new note coming into his voice. 'Surely it isn't too late just because the meetings are over?

Among those who frequently came to the fort were Kit Carson, L. B. Maxwell, Uncle Dick Wooton, Baptiste Brown, Jim Bridger, Old Bill Williams, James Beckwourth, Shawnee Spiebuck, Shawnee Jake the latter two, noted Indian trappers besides a host of others. The majority of the old trappers, to a stranger, until he knew their peculiar characteristics, were seemingly of an unsociable disposition.

Wooton stands in a hollow, near the summit of one of the long swells that here undulate over the face of the country. There is a good deal of wood behind it, as should be the case with the residence of the author of the Sylva; but I believe few, if any, of these trees are known to have been planted by John Evelyn, or even to have been coeval with his time.
