From the high cliffs that overhang the town and its amphitheatre can be seen the faintly outlined harbour, where the white-chimneyed packet snoozes as it were, the smoke curling upwards, almost straight. The sea-air blows fresh and welcome, though it does not beat on a 'fevered brow. There is a busy hum and clatter in the streets, filled with soldiers and sailors and chattering sojourners.
"The Sergeant didn't say a word about that," Denham said to me. I shook my head, and turned to the messenger. "Is he asleep somewhere about the walls?" I asked. "No; I looked there," was the reply. "He always snoozes up on the inner wall, just above the water-hole. There's a place where a big stone has fallen out and no bullets can get at him. I looked there twice."
But you never catch a weasel asleep, and I believe old Leoni always snoozes with one eye open." "I daresay; and I wonder which. But what do you mean about putting it to the test?" "Whether he can see with that fixed eye of his." "Whether he can see? Why shouldn't he?" "Why, you know, of course?" "Not I. Why, of course he can."
Fancy that jaunt to Barville was too much for me; though, to tell the truth, I'm a rotten poor sleeper anyhow. I wake up at the slightest noise in the night, and, having some nerves of my own, usually get a case of heart palpitation, which is deucedly unpleasant. Then perhaps I won't go to sleep again for two hours or more. I envy any fellow who snoozes like a log."
I take dog's snoozes in this corner; and I shall take more dog's snoozes out of doors in the day-time, when the sun begins to shine. I haven't been used to much sleep, and I don't want much. Go in and try if the bed's long enough for you." Zack tried to expostulate again, but Mat interrupted him more gruffly than ever. "I suppose you don't care to sleep next door to such as me," he said.
