Seven years after Alexander's death it recurs at Nicaea in Bithynia, which was refounded by one of Alexander's successors in 323 B.C. and was laid out on this fashion. But no ancient writer credits either the founder or the architect of Alexandria or the founder of Nicaea with any particular theory on the subject.
The house was founded or perhaps refounded more than a millennium ago by Edward the Elder in 907; his daughter was abbess here, and here was buried. In 967 Edgar his grandson gave the house to the Benedictines. It remained English after the Conquest, for William seems not to have dealt with it and in 1086 the sister of Edgar Atheling became abbess.

When Totila conquered Florence, the statue fell into the river, and was not fished out again till Charlemagne refounded the city. Then, perhaps with the view of preventing any subsequent claim by the Priory, she declared the Hospital dissolved. Here ends the first chapter in the history of the Hospital. The foundation for the souls of the two princes existed no longer the children, no doubt, having been long since sung out of Purgatory. Queen Eleanor, however, immediately refounded it.
