The propagation of the human race, and thence of the angelic heaven, was the chief end of creation. 68. PROPAGATE, or plastic force of vegetables and animals, whence it originated, 138. PROPRIUM, man's, from his birth is essentially evil, 262. These two propriums are deadly evils to man, if they remain with him, 194.
Self-love entertains many other insanities with which nature, in itself dead, inspires its fantasy. Such is the effect of self-love, which regarded in itself is love of the proprium. Man's proprium, in respect of its affections which are all natural, is not unlike the life of a beast, and in respect of its perceptions, inasmuch as they spring from these affections, is not unlike a bird of night.
In what manner spiritual and natural fathers act, 406. See Proprium. FAVOR, causes of, between married partners, 278, 287, 290. FEAR. In love truly conjugial there is a fear of loss, 318. This fear resides in the very inmost principles of the mind, 318. FEASTS. There are in heaven, as in the world, both feasts and repasts, 6. FEMALE. See Male and Female.
And therefore the conclusions of all deductive sciences were said by the ancients to be necessary propositions. We have observed already that to be predicated necessarily was characteristic of the predicable Proprium, and that a proprium was any property of a thing which could be deduced from its essence, that is, from the properties included in its definition.
A proprium of the species, however, is predicated of the species necessarily being an attribute, not indeed connoted by the name, but following from an attribute connoted by it. It follows, either by way of demonstration as a conclusion from premisses, or by way of causation as effect from cause; but, in either case, necessarily.
The volitional proprium is evil, and the intellectual proprium is falsity derived from evil; the latter is meant by "the will of man" and the former by "the will of the flesh" in John 1:13. The volitional proprium is in essence self-love, and the intellectual proprium is the pride coming of that love. The two are like married partners, and their union is called the marriage of evil and falsity.
Our men were not driven to this accomplishment by desire for empty fame, or for money, or to widen our borders motives which drove almost all others who take up or have taken up arms. About these the poet correctly says: Quis furor, o cives, quae tanta licentia ferri, Gentibus invisis proprium praebere cruorem?
One attribute may follow from another in two ways; and there are consequently two kinds of Proprium. It may follow as a conclusion follows premisses, or it may follow as an effect follows a cause.
If it is good, it is from influx out of heaven, and if evil, from influx out of hell; or what is the same, the good is from influx from the Lord and the evil from man's proprium.
One who constantly immerses his thoughts in his proprium, therefore, cannot be raised out of natural light into spiritual light and see anything of God, heaven or eternal life.
