One of our correspondents has sent us the following treatment with permanganate of potash which he has found the best roup remedy he has ever tried: Dissolve 1 ounce of permanganate of potash in 3 pints of water, hold the fowl's head in this for a second, then open the beak and rinse out the mouth in the solution.
It should be noted, however, that very few of these organic compounds react quantitatively with the permanganate, as is the case with oxalic acid and the oxalates.
A student standardized a solution of NaOH and one of KMnO against pure KHC O .H C O .2H O and found the former to be 0.07500 N as an alkali and the latter exactly 0.1 N as an oxidizing agent. By coincidence, exactly 47.26 cc. were used in each standardization. Find the ratio of the oxalate used in the NaOH standardization to the oxalate used in the permanganate standardization. !Answer!: 1:1.

As commercial samples of the permanganate are likely to be contaminated by the dioxide, it is advisable to boil and filter solutions through asbestos before standardization, as prescribed above.
