Yet I who have achieved this work of pride, I cannot share the rapture felt by all: My heart is changed, my heart is turned aside, It shuns the splendor of this festival; 'Tis in the British camp it seeks to hide, 'Tis on the foe my yearning glances fall; And from the joyous circle I must steal, My bosom's crime o'erpowering to conceal. Who?
"In your charity forgive her; her sorrow was o'erpowering." "Sorrow! The mule of an English! She wasn't there." "You don't say," cried Ben. "If above she is I will have her dragged down." "Not a stone did she put over your head, and the strumpets of your sisters did not tend your grave. Why you were not eaten by worms I can't know."
Few could observe from his conduct what was passing in his mind; yet the quivering of his softened tones and the mild lustre of his mellowed gaze; his subdued and quiet manner; his un-perceived yet infinite attentions; his memory of little incidents that all but lovers would have forgotten; the total absence of all compliment, and gallantry, and repartee; all these, to a fine observer, might have been gentle indications of a strong passion; and to her to whom they were addressed sufficiently intimated that no change had taken place in his feelings since the warm hour in which he first whispered his o'erpowering love.
And then disgorges wain and steeds, And swords and javelins bright; Then, as the dreadful dragon bleeds, Up starts the warrior-knight, And from his place of ambush leaps, And, brandishing his blade, The weapon in the brain he steeps, And splits the monster's head. But the foul venom issuing thence, Is so o'erpowering found, Isfendiyár, deprived of sense, Falls staggering to the ground!
Yes! there is hope and joy; and it is here! Where the breeze wanders through a perfumed sky, and where the beautiful sun illumines beauty. On the poet's farm and on the conqueror's arch thy beam is lingering! It lingers on the shattered porticoes that once shrouded from thy o'erpowering glory the lords of earth; it lingers upon the ruined temples that even in their desolation are yet sacred!
