I opened it carelessly, but as my eye fell on the President's hand, I started in amazement. The note was dated "Saturday From on board The Songstress," and ran as follows: It is a pleasant thing, as has been remarked, laudari a laudato viro, and the President's praise was grateful to me. But I did not see my way to fall in with his views.

Laudari a laudato; to be called noble by one whom you and the world recognize as noble: this great satisfaction, never perhaps in such a degree before or after had now been vouchsafed to Sterling; and was, as I compute, an important fact for him. He proceeded on his pilgrimage with new energy, and felt more and more as if authentically consecrated to the same.

In no poet, not even in Burns, is simple, natural emotion more naturally expressed. If we cannot praise the character of the man, we must admire the graceful poet. Nothing can give a truer picture of affection than the following tender and exquisitely musical lines: "Non ego laudari curo: mea Delia, tecum Dummodo sim quaeso segnis inersque vocer.

There is I know not what natural sweetness in hearing one's self commended; but we are a great deal too fond of it: "Laudari metuam, neque enim mihi cornea fibra est Sed recti finemque extremumque esse recuso Euge tuum, et belle." I care not so much what I am in the opinions of others, as what I am in my own; I would be rich of myself, and not by borrowing.
