I had advanced perhaps two yards without reaching the end of this odd underground apartment, when suddenly, and directly in my front, there sounded a deep, hollow, unearthly groan. The sound was so terrifying that I stopped with chilled blood and beating heart, gripping my knife-hilt and peering forward into the dark as frightened as ever I was in my life.
Everything was scarlet about him, his moccasins, his naked skin, the fantastic cloak and blanket, girdle, knife-hilt, axe shaft, and the rattling quiver on his back nay, the very arrows in it were set with scarlet feathers, and the looped bowstring was whipped with crimson sinew.
All the rest listened silently, except Lindau; at every point the colonel made against the present condition of things he said more and more fiercely, "You are righdt, you are righdt." His eyes glowed, his hand played with his knife-hilt. When the colonel demanded, "And what is the next thing?" he threw himself forward, and repeated: "Yes, sir! What is the next thing?"
He had been found alone with the dead man. Those men, when they came surging in attracted by the noise of strife, had found him lying on Slavin, his hand clutching the knife-hilt. He ran his eyes over their horrified faces, and knew instantly they held him the murderer. The shock of this discovery steadied him.
And he could see the outline of the knife-hilt that the man's fingers clutched underneath his shirt. "He'll either strike first, so as to kill us both and do the looting afterward and in that case I think it will be easier to break his neck than his arm yes, decidedly his neck; it's long and thin; or " His eyes feigned sleep so successfully that the native turned away at last. "Thought so!"
