The existence in various places of masses of cinders, fragments of charred wood, and half-calcined bones, proves it yet more decidedly. These slabs formed the family hearth, where man prepared his food, with the help of the fire he had learnt to ignite and to keep burning. How did man arrive at a discovery so vital to his existence?

To his great surprise, beneath the ruins, under coal dust and half-calcined trunks of trees, he discovered, elevated several feet above the soil, the partition of a wall, some stones quarried out and placed one upon another; in fine, the remains of a building, evidently constructed by the hand of man. Men had then inhabited this island before him! What had become of them?

There was not a branch left. The trees were tremendous, half-calcined columns, and, for it was evident that any wild wind seldom entered the deep hollow, they might have stood in that condition a year or more. The trouble in traversing a brûlée is that one cannot tell when, from some cause or other, one of them may come down.

Within what may have been the briefest interval on record for a conflagration of its size the Tuileries was but a smoking pile of half-calcined stones. The Tuileries had another brief day of glory when the Prince President, Louis Napoleon, entered its gates, coming straight from his inauguration at Notre Dame.

Here and there were scattered heaps of corn; at other places the barley was shedding its reddened ears. The villages showed black upon the clear horizon, with shapes incoherently carved. From time to time a half-calcined piece of wall would be found standing on the edge of the road.

Poor Clarimonde had no sooner been touched by the blessed spray than her beautiful body crumbled into dust, and became only a shapeless and frightful mass of cinders and half-calcined bones. 'Behold your mistress, my Lord Romuald! cried the inexorable priest, as he pointed to these sad remains.
