And yet, supposing the atmosphere to have taken refuge upon that face? Suppose that with the air water had given life to these regenerated continents? Suppose that vegetation still persists there? Suppose that animals people these continents and seas? Suppose that man still lives under those conditions of habitability? How many questions there were it would have been interesting to solve!
"The question then reverts to this: Are these worlds habitable? For my own part I believe they are." "For myself, I feel certain of it," said Michel Ardan. "Nevertheless," retorted one of the audience, "there are many arguments against the habitability of the worlds. The conditions of life must evidently be greatly modified upon the majority of them.
If we could accurately analyze that atmosphere we would have a basis for more exact conclusions concerning Venus's habitability.
Thus the wide habitability of the earth is an effect arising from the inclination of its polar axis.
I acquired the belief in the habitability of other worlds when quite young, and it long ago grew into a settled conviction. Firmly held by this idea, what is called the astronomical difficulty in theology gave me great concern.
If there be astronomers upon Venus, armed with telescopes, it is safe to guess that they possess a knowledge of the surface of the earth far exceeding in minuteness and accuracy the knowledge that we possess of the features of any heavenly body except the moon. They must long ago have been able to form definite conclusions concerning the meteorology and the probable habitability of our planet.
Coming homeward from the distant heavens, the advances of astronomy diminish as we near what may be called the old planets and our pale companion the moon. The existence of a lunar atmosphere and the habitability of Mars are still debated; with, we believe, the odds against both. But the star-gazers make their craft useful in a novel way when it reaches the earth.
Since it is our intention to discuss the habitability of only one of the seven to which the question applies, the rest may be dismissed in a few words.
There is another altogether different line of argument in favor of the habitability of the stars, which I omit for the present. I only desire to call attention to one point. To those who maintain that the planets are not inhabited one may reply: You might be perfectly in the right, if you could only show that the earth is the best possible world, in spite of what Voltaire has said.
This period, closely accordant with the earth's, is, as far as it goes, another argument for the habitability of Venus.
