Versmann found 14.1 grms. of dried liver to contain 0.009 grm. chloride of silver, or 0.047 per cent. of metallic silver. In the kidneys he found 0.007 grm. chloride of silver, or 0.061 per cent. of metallic silver; this was in a case of chronic poisoning, the percentage will be seen to be very small. Orfila Jun. found silver in the liver five months after the poisoning.
If this is poured dropwise into much water, the mixture turns bluish, and if it is then shaken up with ether or chloroform, the form takes a purple and the latter a very permanent blue. Codeine gives the same reaction, but no other of the alkaloids. This reaction can be obtained very distinctly with 0.0004 grm. of morphia. By C. G. SARNSTROM.
It is then titrated back with decinormal soda; from this is now readily deducted the amount of carbonic acid, and from that the MnO , holding in view that 44 parts of carbonic acid is equivalent to 43.5 of MnO or 98.87 per cent, and that 1 c.c. of the N/10 baryta solution is equivalent to 0.0022 grm. of CO .
Lunch: Mutton; two dishes of vegetables, or macaroni rice; salad; rice pudding; coffee; fruit. Dinner: The same as lunch, but without fruit. ORDINARY DIET. Breakfast: Arab bread; sweetened fresh milk. Lunch: Arab bread; beef; rice, vegetables. Dinner: Arab bread; rice soup; rice pudding. MILK DIET. Breakfast: Bread, 350 grm.; sweetened milk. Lunch: Arab bread; soup; beef-tea; rice pudding.
If the red color of the wool is due to archil or cudbear, it is extracted by hydrochloric acid, which is colored red. Ammonia turns the color to a purple violet. Koenig mixed 50 c.c. wine with ammonia in slight excess, and places in the mixture about one-half grm. clean white woolen yarn. The whole is then boiled in a flask until all the alcohol and the excess of ammonia are driven off.
The morphia solution sinks to the bottom, and where the liquids touch there is formed a red color, passing into violet at the margin, while the ammoniacal stratum takes a pure blue. The reaction is very distinct to 0.0006 grm. Codeine does not give this reaction. If sulphuric acid at 190 deg. to 200 deg. is allowed to act upon morphia, there is ultimately formed an opaque black green mass.
For testing a sample of 0.2 to 0.4 grm. of a liquid, and from 0.8 to 1.0 grm. of a solid fat being used, which is dissolved in 10 c.c. chloroform and treated with 20 c.c. mercury iodo-chloride solution run into it from a burette, if the liquid appear opalescent a further measure of chloroform is introduced, while the amount of mercury iodo-chloride must be such as to produce a brownish coloration of the chloroform for two subsequent hours.
We should further expect this to have a constitution between PbSn and PbSn and a melting-point somewhat below 181°. On melting together tin and lead, and allowing the alloy to cool, we find our expectation justified; for by pouring off the fluid portion which remains after solidification has commenced, and repeating this several times with the portion so removed, we at length obtain an alloy which solidifies at the constant temperature of 180°, when the melting-point of tin is taken as 228°. On analysis 1.064 grm. of this alloy gave 0.885 grm.
Dinner: Bread, 350 grm.; sweetened milk. FEVER DIET. Breakfast: Milk, 400 grm., without sugar. Lunch: 400 grm. of milk without sugar. Dinner: 400 grm. of milk without sugar. On Sunday and Thursday mutton is replaced by game. On the same two days a course of sweetened rice and macaroni is substituted for fruit.
