The words which concern the conduct of Vigilius are taken from Cardinal Hergenröther. Baronius, A.D. 538, sec. 5, gives from Anastasius the words of the empress, and the Pope's answer, and the following narrative. Gregorovius, i. 372. See Liberatus, Breviarium, ch. xxii. Liberatus, Breviarium. Reumont, ii. 49. St. Gregory, Dialogues, ii. 14, 18.
But who will believe that Lucrezia, already the legal wife of Alfonso d'Este and on the eve of departure for Ferrara, can have been present as a smiling spectator?" Quite so. Gregorovius puts his finger at once upon one of the obvious weaknesses of the story.
The fastness of Sant' Angelo, metropolis of European angel-worship, has grown up around this "devout and honourable cave"; on sunny days its houses are clearly visible from Man-fredonia. They who wish to pay their devotions at the shrine cannot do better than take with them Gregorovius, as cicerone and mystagogue. Vainly I waited for a fine day to ascend the heights.
They achieve no more, however, than to belittle those who penned them; for, even as they are true, the marvel is that the admirable matter in these truths appears to have escaped those authors. What else Gregorovius opines that Cesare was no Messiah of United Italy is true enough. Cesare was the Messiah of Cesare.
And so on, and so on, in one journal after another, in edition upon edition. Harvey Rolfe read them till he was weary, listened to the gossip of the club till he was nauseated. He went home at length with a headache, and, having carefully avoided contact with Buncombe or Mrs Handover, made an effort to absorb himself in a volume of Gregorovius, which was at present his study.
This we gather from Savonarola's denunciations, from the animated pictures drawn by Alberti in his Trattato della Famiglia and Cena della Famiglia and also from the inductions to many of the Sacre Rappresentazioni. See Gregorovius, Stadt Rom, vol. viii. p. 225: 'E li cardinali comenzarono a vomitar e cussi li altri, quoted from Sanudo.
See Gregorovius, Geschichte der Stadt Rom, vol. viii. p. 127, and the quotation there translated from Pallavicini's History of the Council of Trent. See Vol. I., Age of the Despots, pp. 296-298. Vol. II., Revival of Learning, pp. 161-166. For his architectural designs see his Life, by Manetti, book ii., in Muratori, vol. iii. part ii. Gregorovius, vol. vii. p. 638.
Translated from Hergenröther's K.G., i., pp. 345-351, from p. 232, above, "at this point Justinian sought," &c., with reference also to the life of Photius. Hergenröther, Photius, i. 174; Rump, K.G., ix. 283. See Reumont, ii. 58-62; Gregorovius, i. 453-9. Reumont, 60. Gregorovius, 455. Ibid., 456. Reumont, 61. Gregorovius, 450-2. See vol. v. 281. Constitutio, lxxxii. 667.
We know that she left the duke, her husband, stricken with a grief that was shared by his subjects, to whom she had so deeply endeared herself by her exemplary life and loving rule. 1 Ferdinand Gregorovius, Lucrezia Borgia. 2 See, inter alia, the letters of Alfonso d'Este and Giovanni Gonzaga on her death, quoted in Gregorovius, Lucrezia Borgia.
A copy of this anonymous pamphlet, which is the most violent attack on the Borgias ever penned, perhaps the most terrible indictment against any family ever published a pamphlet which Gregorovius does not hesitate to call "an authentic document of the state of Rome under the Borgias" fell into the hands of the Cardinal of Modena, who on the last day of the year carried it to the Pope.
