I should prefer believing that the Galaxias was a species, like the Emys of the Sewalik Hills, which has long retained the same form.

None of them are referable to existing species. Among the last are crocodiles and tortoises of the genera Emys and Trionyx. Xiphodon gracile, or Anoplotherium gracile, Cuvier. The tribe of land quadrupeds most abundant in this formation is such as now inhabits alluvial plains and marshes, and the banks of rivers and lakes, a class most exposed to suffer by river inundations.

The reptiles, which are very abundant in this division, consist partly of saurians, referred by Owen and Mantell to eight genera, among which, besides those already enumerated, we find the Megalosaurus and Plesiosaurus. The Pterodactyl also, a flying reptile, is met with in the same strata, and many remains of Chelonians of the genera Trionyx and Emys, now confined to tropical regions.

These fresh-water tortoises, the greater number of which are included in the genus Emys of naturalists, are distinguished by having their toes webbed. Some of them live upon animal as well as vegetable food, and those which subsist exclusively on the former, are noted as having the flattest shells. It is generally distributed in the lower parts of Ceylon, in lakes and tanks.

Among the Turtles is Emys picta, Chelonura serpentina, and Cistuda clausa. Of the Frogs, we have Rana sylvatica, Rana palustris, and Rana pipiens, nearly two feet long, and loud-voiced in proportion, a Bull-Frog, indeed! Various theories and speculations have been formed as to the origin of the prairies.

In the bottom of this mere were found two shells of the fresh-water tortoise, Emys lutaria, till then unknown in England. They may be bought at Paris, at fashionable restaurants. Thither they may have been sent from Vienna or Berlin; for in north France, Holland, and north-west Germany they are unknown.

But the emys which came to the Wretham bog must have had a long journey; and a journey by fresh water too.

Then Llwydawg went thence to Ystrad Yw, and there the men of Armorica met him, and there he slew Hirpeissawg, the king of Armorica, and Llygatrudd Emys, and Gwrbothu, Arthur's uncles, his mother's brothers, and there was he himself slain.

He picks up a terrapin, the Emys picta, which attempts to hide itself from him in a stone wall, and carries it considerately to a pond of water; but there is not much to be found in the woods, and one can travel a whole day in the forest primeval without coming across anything better than a few squirrels and small birds.
