Long lines of clumsy carts, with high wheels, rumble over the cobblestone pavements with a dreadful clatter. In the open doorways of shops we see men and women manufacturing articles for sale. Some are making chairs, some shoes, some jewelry, some boxes, and, in one place, we see a number of workmen making coffins.

"Two years ago he bought the Cap'n Wegg farm, over by Millville, an' " "Where's Millville?" inquired the man. "Seven mile back in the hills. The farm ain't nuthin' but cobblestone an' pine woods, but " "How big is Millville?" "Quite a town. In a half-second the workman had dropped his pail and let fly at him. Unprepared, Samuel took the blow neatly on the jaw and sprawled full length into the cobblestone gutter. "Don't laugh at me!" cried his assailant. "I been workin' all day.

The island proved to be larger than they had thought and commercially important. They had, the day before, but crossed a neck of it. Soon now they reached the verge of the town and stood on its main artery of traffic; the cobblestone pavement resounded with the rattling of carts and rough native vehicles.

Its rich, ochrous rivulets containing no visible trace of haemorrhage, in spite of that abuse of an adjective were creeping slowly along the interstices of cobblestone paving that still outlived the incoming of Macadam, when Dave and Dolly Wardle ventured out of their archway to renew a survey, begun the previous day, of the fascinating excavation in the main street.
