CLI. The House Bonga. Once upon a time there was a house bonga who lived in the house of the headman of a certain village; and it was a shocking thief; it used to steal every kind of grain and food, cooked and uncooked; out of the houses of the villagers. The villagers knew what was going on but could never catch it.

This trifid cross represents a game played by the Hopi with reeds and is depicted on many objects of pottery. The two designs shown in plate CLI, e, f, are believed to be decorative, or, if symbolic, they have been so worn by the constant use of the vessel that it is impossible to determine their meaning by comparative methods.

The significance of the spiral in the design on plate CLI, a, is unknown. It is found in several pictures, in some of which it appears to have avian relationship. As in many bird figures, a star is found on the opposite semicircle. There is a remote likeness between this figure and that of the head of the bird shown in plate CXLV, d.

The biological works of Aristotle were rendered into Latin direct from the Greek in the year 1260 probably by William of Moerbeke.

CLI. TO GUSTAVE FLAUBERT Paris, February, 1870 It is for Friday. Then I am disposing of the two seats that I intended for your niece. If you have a moment free, and come to the Odeon that night, you will find me in the manager's box, proscenium, ground floor. I am heavy-hearted about all you tell me. Here you are again in gloom, sorrow and chagrin. Poor dear friend!

In M. Bozzano's excellent collection, which is a sort of compendium of Premonitory phenomena, the only pretty clear cases are nos. cli, and clviii., both of which are taken from the Journal of the S.P.R. In the first, a mother sent a servant to bring home her little daughter, who had already left the house with the intention of going through the "railway garden," a strip of ground between the se. wall and the railway embankment, in order to sit on the great stone, by the seaside and see the trains pass by.
